ecent experimental results [1,2] suggest that optical fiers having a negative index step from cladding to core, ombined with an adequately large gain coefficient in a arge-diameter core region, can provide robust single ransverse mode operation having very large mode area ithout requiring complex fiber structures or other mode iscrimination measures. This paper reviews the imporant mode properties of these “gain-guided, indexntiguided” GG+IAG optical fibers and presents simple nalytical approximations for their properties over a ange of design parameters. The propagating modes in a simple step-profile optical ber of core diameter 2a that has both an index step n nd a power-gain coefficient g in the fiber core with repect to the surrounding cladding can be characterized in erms of dimensionless index and gain parameters N nd G, defined by

We investigate numerically and analytically the effects of gain saturation on the propagation of the fundamental mode in a gain-guided index-antiguided slab waveguide. The propagating mode adapts to gain saturation by becoming less confined, while at the same time its peak intensity increases more slowly. At steady state, both the mode shape and the power remain constant.
